Pompeii

Pompeii was an ancient town in Campania, located on the Gulf of Naples, which was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. After a violent explosion and an earthquake Pompeii was buried under a rain of ash and incandescent lava flow breccia. The town was preserved under a layer of ash, 5 to 8 m thick and over the course of time the town was forgotten. In the 18th century Pompeii was re-discovered and became the central focus of archaeology and of research into the Ancient World. Today, Pompeii is a large open-air museum. The buildings, the columns of the ancient temple complex, the theatre, the villas, frescoes, streets and everyday objects give fascinating glimpses into the day-to-day life of the Ancients.
